So,
accioslash asks us to tell her about our first time. That is, the first time you read fanfic, HP or otherwise. For me, Harry Potter and fanfic will always be irrevocably tied together.
You see, I'd avoided the whole Harry Potter frenzy. I heard of it, of course, but wasn't interested in the slightest. In fact, it had become a point of pride that I hadn't read any of the books (don't ask me. Younger me made little sense). But, then my students ganged up on me. They basically accused me of being a hypocrite, citing the fact tht I always encouraged them to try things before judging when I wasn't willing to do the same. Shame-faced, I promised to read them. So, that weekend I dutifully got myself to Borders and bought Sorcerer's Stone. I was, of course, completely hooked and went back the next day and bought all the books I could (up to OotP).
After that, I was completely obsessed with the books. My students were gleeful and I was frantically trying to figure out when HBP would be coming out. It was during a simple google search for HBP that I stumbled across fanfiction.net. I was aghast...I was enthralled. Somehow, in all the crazy excesses I'd experienced, I'd never discovered fanfic. I don't understand how i'd missed it for so many years but it just wasn't on my radar.
But I'd found it and a whole new world was opening up for me, an avid reader and dreamer. Suffice to say, I was instantly sucked in. I couldn't possibly tell you the first fic I read; all I remember was it was H/D and it seemed the perfect pairing. Thin line between love and hate and all that. But, I found
willysunny almost immediately after that. And, the first fic I do remember reading was her gorgeous story, Transcending (which, unbelievably, I still haven't commented on. That's going to be fixed as soon as I post this. *fails*). Anyway, that was the fic that lead me to getting my LJ. I knew I had to stalk this woman. Soon after Willow, and through her LJ, I met
kaalee and it seems the rest all just fell into place.
H/D was definitely my first OTP. However as I began reading fic and meta and re-reading the books, I discovered a wealth of characters and possibilities. Snarry very quickly became my other favourite and to this day, I love both pairings. These days I'm willing to give various pairings a go; I've become more interested in premise and, if it seems feasible, am all for it. I'm an adventurous reader and enjoy a massive variety of parings, genres, and themes.
I still haven't really branched out into other fandoms. I've read a wee bit of Dr. Who and Torchwood fic. Right now, I'm getting into some Glee fic right now but so far am picky about what I'll read. Aside from that, I'm mainly an HP girl.
HP, livejournal and, in it's own way, fan fic changed my life. It absolutely, positively changed it. I read fic that resonated with me on a deep level and through my discovery of fic, I began meeting people who welcomed me into their lives. People who challenged me and lifted me up. People who have become true mates.
As a direct result of all that I was experiencing, I began rethinking some key things in my life. I allowed myself to let go of unrealistic ideals and hopes and in doing so, found myself. In fact, in a nice circle of life touch, it was Willow who introduced me to my beloved girlfriend and, a couple months later, one of my most treasured friends. So, yes, Accio, I absolutely remember discovering fanfic and I know, without a doubt, it changed my life for the better.
Speaking of fan fic,
tipgardner recently re-posted A Case of Conventions, which is a Hermione/Viktor fic with side orders of Blaise/Pancy and Harry/Draco. It's a scorching hot and rather clever piece. I really love the way he paces the story and sets up the pairings. It's extremely well written and did I mention smoking hot? I suggest everyone go read it.
And, that's more than enough schmoop from me. Happy Monday, lovelies!
