(no subject)

I'm listening to samples from Alan Cumming's first solo album. It's quite..quirky, like him. It's a completely random collection of songs and some of his interpretations are very interesting/strange. In fact, it's probably not a very good album but I love it nonetheless.

I spent a fabulous weekend in NYC last February. Wonderful for a couple of reasons, one highlight was seeing Alan perform this collection at the Lincoln Center, in one of their intimate performance spaces. His wit, delightful observations and re-tooling of some classic songs reminded me why I admire and appreciate him so much. Listening to these samples makes me happy and I suspect I'll have to brave limewire today to find DLs.

But for now...five for Friday, with a musical slant:

1. What's one of your favourite songs right now?

2. If you celebrate Christmas, is there a particular song that reminds you of the holidays/gets you into the spirit?

3. What is one of your favourite concert memories?

4. What musician/band is your dirty little secret? Or do you not care, like me, and proclaim your love of cheesy, terrible bands for all to hear?

5. The Jonas Brothers are....

I've put up all the lovely holiday cards I've received (thanks again everyone!). I have bacon in the oven for a feta cheese pastry i'm making (omg, yum!). And, I'm curled up in the armchair listening to the rain pound down. Right here, in this moment, today is gorgeous. Happy Friday, lovelies!

*flexes fingers*

1. I don't have one song that I play over and over again, although there are a couple of favourites: What If-John Mayer, Shine-Take That, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious-Harry Connick Jr (although I'll love basically anything he sings) and I could go on for a while...

2. There's a Dutch song that I love but that hardly ever gets played in the church services. It's a doubly good Christmas the few times it happens!

3. That'll have to be the first pop concert I went to: New Kids On The Block and I guess I was about 15. I don't remember a lot about it except that it was the first time at such a venue and the atmosphere. I did wonder about all the screaming girls, though (I still do)...

4. Heh - I admit freely to liking NKOTB and basically any band I like. At least, right now I can't think of any band/singer I have in iTunes I wouldn't own up to...

5. A bit over-hyped, imho. But some of their songs are darned catchy ;-)

1. I'm like you. I have a playlist called rotating favourites, which is ostensibly the current faves. But I never rotate anything. :) I like Harry Connick Jr's version of Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious a lot.

2. Awww, nice. For me, it's Judy Garland's Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.

3. Ahahaha. I think I might have been at a similar concert around the same time. I too don't understand the screaming girls. I've been lucky enough to go to some truly amazing concerts though.

4. Hee. NKOTB used to be my guilty secret but I could care less now if people know. My taste in music is wide and varied and I never said all of it was good. :)

5. I've actually never heard a Jonas Brother song. But my goddaughter is in love with them. I need to try to DL some of their music for her.

1. And I'm SO loving the new Snow Patrol ("Just Say Yes") :D

2. That's a lovely one *nods*

3. And omg then they started crying when the concert was over!! And I was all WTF? since the tickets had sold out fast and I was just happy to be able to be there... I don't think I'll ever make the die!hard!fangirls' club...

4. Exactly!

5. Plz to be going here (http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=464e52300df632d036df4e8dca141969962ce5f55d1b4f5fc95965eaa7bc68bc) ;-)

1. Oh, yeah, I really like it too! But I pretty much think I'll love anything SP puts out.

3. Ahahaha. Yes. I went with my best friend, who was one of the screamer/crier types. i actually re-thought our friendship. :) I think that now I'd make the die-hard!fangirl's club. But there still wouldn't be screaming or crying involved.

5. omg, thank you so much! i promised the imp i'd burn a cd or two and was dreading looking for them.

[identity profile] nefernat.livejournal.com 2009-12-21 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Heee! I'm guessing me too because this one is another wonderful song *nods*

3. Heeee!! Yeah, I get what you mean. There are bands I'm so so enthusiastic about that I'd try an application for that club ;-)

5. Aren't you glad I'm so open about my guilty pleasures?? Heh - you can do with some time-saving help. <3

[identity profile] inspiredlife.livejournal.com 2009-12-21 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
1. I like Give Me Strength a fair bit too. :)

3. There's only a couple but they have all my love and inner fangirling. :)

5. I am! Thanks again. It certainly does help save me some time!

[identity profile] nefernat.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 10:46 am (UTC)(link)
3. I share the inner fangirling super power *nods*

5. Yay!!! :D

oddly, the theme music from the British show Spooks.

Amahl and the Night Visitors.

Oh, fuck: The Beatles at Candlestick; The Stones in Seattle; The Doors at Mt. Tamalpais, Big Brother and the Holding Company at the Avalon, Jimi at Monterey Pop. - Or Pete Seeger at the Topanga Canyon Banjo and Fiddle Contest.

oh, lol- aren't they all guilty secrets at one time or another?

annoying.

*sings* I love rock'n'roll/Put another dime in the jukebox, baby!

[identity profile] inspiredlife.livejournal.com 2009-12-21 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Spooks, aye? Interesting!

Oh, I did Amahl and the Night Visitors once. Great show but that entire production was a disaster; sadly, it turned me off the music a bit.

Oh, yeah, you've seen some amazing shows. So lucky!

Ahahaha! i've never thought of it that way but how true.

annoying x ten.

*hugs*

I hope you don't mind newbies Fridaying...

1) anything by Take That, because I just got the DVD...

2) I hate Christmas, but Last Christmas helps...

3) see 1) - my daughter and I saw the Wembley concert

4) I admit to playing If Santa Was My Daddy by Little Jimmy Osmond...

5) ...something that nearly beat Rupert Grint in a fan-vote thing, last year, but that is all I know about them... I suspect they are a pop-group...

I love newbies Fridaying...(and i'm usually not completely pants at replying to comments).

1) Take That seems to back in their place of dominance, yeah?

2) Last Christmas is cheesy and ridiculous and so good!

3) That sounds awesome. I've had amazing experiences at both huge stadiums and small intimate venues. I saw Bon Jovi at Wembley in 1995 and that show's in my top 10.

4) At least you have no problem owning up to it!

5) they are a pop group, much loved by my nine-year old goddaughter and her mates. i still haven't heard one of their songs and I'm not all that heartbroken.

Aw, Alan. Seriously, I appreciate the man´s brilliance (and looks!) more with every passing year :) What is the album like, style-wise? Have you downloaded it yet?

1. Wheels, Don´t Stop The Music, Music Is Through. Predictable, wot?

2. the more "classic", older carols: we used to have several tapes to play over Christmas and I fell in love with these. Here´s one: "The Virgin on the Donkey" (http://www.nohavica.cz/cz/media/spolu/panna_na_oslu.mp3); I´ll see if I can find more.

3. I don´t have to even tell you, do I.

4. I think you know the answer here, too. Hm, what would you think the cheesiest of my music? Actually, I think the dirty little secret is Enya now :)

5. ALL OVER roflrazzi, which is annoying.

mm, feta cheese pastry? The little crescent things we looked at? How were they? That moment in time sounds pretty glorious ♥
