inspiredlife: (good luck exploring...)
I'm so far behind on reading and commenting on, well, everything. But, the lovely [livejournal.com profile] i_claudia  has written a little bit of comment fic for me and I must bring it to your attention.

I'm assuming most of you Merlin folk have read Check and Mate. If you haven't, go read it now. Written in the style of Patrick O'Brian, Claudia has developed a lush world where Merlin is a Navy man and Arthur, Lord Pendragon, is enamoured of him. I think most of you know that I love period pieces and this one delivers in all the best ways. It's smoking hot, full of gorgeous angst and there is such beautiful yearning. I loved every single moment of this read and am embarrassed I haven't commented on it yet.

Even more amazing, Claudia wrote me a continuation of it here. This is just a wee comment fic but it packs a punch and has put a huge grin on my face. Then lucky [livejournal.com profile] lolafeist got a comment fic, filled with delicious angst as well.

Seriously, I can't express how lovely this 'verse is. If you haven't read it, do check it out.  Thanks, Claudia, this has been a real treat and I can only hope there's more in this 'verse one day. <3

Daily dose(s) and other nattering coming up in next post but first, a rec! We have been given an embarrassment of riches in terms of fic and art this month. With [livejournal.com profile] paperlegends[livejournal.com profile] whizzbangpop and [livejournal.com profile] merlinbb_rpf all posting it's a bit overwhelming. I'm slowly making my way through and I've been really enjoying all I've read. but sometimes, there's a story that just makes me stop, forces me slow down my reading and savor every word. Chibi's bb is exactly that story.

[livejournal.com profile] chibirhm's Drawn to Any Good (Or, The Education of Lord Arthur Pendragon)
Pairing, Rating, Length: Arthur/Merlin, Gwen/Lancelot, R, a little under 60k+
Summary: In which Lord Arthur Pendragon loses everything and gains a magician.

I don't even know what to say about this story. It transcends fic, imo. Set in early-Victorian England, this fic read like it could be one of my favourite novels, with the added bonus of featuring characters I already know and love.  Speaking of characters, I felt it was wonderfully in character. I loved Merlin who was portrayed as a powerful wizard, one who was competent, gentle, cautious and wonderfully patient. Arthur as a besotted aristocrat who risks everything wormed his way into my heart almost immediately.

In addition, Chibi's concept was wonderful. I don't want to give any too many details but I really liked her time period, the premise she set forward and the way it was carried out.  She's also created a well rounded cast of characters (particular love for Gawain and Morgana!) that work incredibly well together.

As if this wasn't enough, a large part of this story is epistolary, which is one of my favourite things in fic. Being able to read correspondence between characters heightens one's understanding of those characters and provides a lovely glimpse into a developing relationship. There's something so intimate and revealing about letters, etc.  Plus, I think this style really highlights an author's skill. And Chibi's language is perfect...whether it's alternating letters between Merlin and Arthur, delightful banter, formal addresses, the girl's got it down.

I could go on and on but I think it best to shoo you along to the fic. It's truly a fantastic story and will stay with me for a long time, if only because I smile every time I think of it.

I do not have the time, energy or desire to deal with LJ's latest fuck-up. Simply put, my privacy is extremely important to me. My LJ is largely flocked for a number of reasons, one of the primary ones being my career. While my LJ does reflect a lot of my rl, I do not want it connected with my fb and twitter. Suffice to say, i will never crosspost material from anyone else's journal, including my comments. I respectfully request that you extend me the same courtesy. That being said, I do have a DW account (I'm inspiredlife there too) but don't have any plans to move there. I've been on LJ a long time and am, for the most part, happy here.

If you'd like to prevent accidental cross posting, here's a link to the Greasemonkey script that gets rid of the FB/twitter buttons in the comment box.

In other news, September is traditionally a difficult month for me. There's a lot of sadness for me and it's been made worse these past few years as it's become the time that my idyll with Mish ends. In keeping with my post from Monday, I'd like to try to find positive things each day. They'll probably be small, silly things but look for a da: ily dose of happy from me. And, if you don't see one...call me on it. (though not until the night - given my current work situation they will be later in the day).

Today's daily dose of happy:
So, posting began the other day on one of the Merlin bb's, [livejournal.com profile] paperlegends. I haven't actually had time to read any of the stories yet but I had the absolute joy of beta-ing [livejournal.com profile] nieded's wonderful story, A Personal History of Midwestern Running.  A modern high school au, the story tracks the journey Arthur and Merlin take when Arthur starts coaching Merlin in running. It's a completely believable take on the drama and angst every teenager faces and she's written absolutely wonderful characters. I don't even know what else to say about this story because I just love it to bits. It's very much been a happy thing these last few weeks.

Alright. Off to rustle up some supper.

eta: I'm so behind on comments, it's absurd. thanks for all wonderful comments over the past few weeks. they've been greatly appreciated even if i'm lame and didn't acknowledge them. <3

Just a wee bit stressed out today. I have some insane work stuffs going on. I haven't been paid since May 18th. If all goes as planned, I'll get two paychecks on Tuesday but fuck, money is tight. I over-drafted my account by 62 cents today. Awesome. Also, my allergies are acting up like crazy. I don't even know what it is I'm reacting to but it's awful. Lastly, I'm so behind on my flist. I have fics and posts to comment on bookmarked hopefully I can catch up this weekend.

On the plus side of things...
♥ My beloved Celts won last night, tying up the series 2-2

♥ Wooo-hoo World Cup! I know what I'm doing this weekend

♥ Mish is, I think, so close to buying her ticket. It won't feel real to me until then but hopefully today!

The Sound of Merlin. This is exactly what you might have guessed, a Merlin fic based on The Sound of Music. You might not this but I'm a sucker for the Sound of Music. I've done the show four times and have been known to listen to the soundtrack when I'm low. So you can bet I clicked that link as fast as I could. Featuring Merlin as Maria, Arthur as the Captain and the Knights as the children (so much love for wee!Leon). I'll admit it this fic is made up of silliness and I do wish it was fleshed out a bit more. But it's also utterly fantastic and so very sweet. If you're looking for some easy entertainment definitely check it out.

I definitely had more to say but my brain is all fuzzy and tired. So...happy Friday lovelies!  :)

eta: oh, i remembered one of the things. I don't read on filters. I may suck at commenting but I always read. However, I do post on filters, mainly because I try to spare some of you my full inanity (though some of you will never escape. muhahaha!). Anyway, if you're just here for the fandom stuff and want nothing to do with the RL ramblings please let me know. No hard feelings, I promise. Likewise if you're one of my HP friends who has become a beloved RL friend and are getting tired about my increasing ridiculousness regarding Colin Morgan, his cheekbones of d00m and Merlin fic, tell me! I can create a Merlin fandom filter if you'd like.  *loves on the flist*

inspiredlife: (Celts: beat LA)
I slept four and a half hours last night. WTF, body?! Why do you hate me so? Still, it means I'll get through the crap parts of today that much faster so there is that.

The Celtics rocked my world last night. Honestly, screaming at the tv in delight. And, I'll never get tired of chanting beat LA, even when we're not playing them and don't even know yet if we will be.

If you're a fan of Meriln and you're not reading the very talented H. Hogan's facebook recaps, you have to check them out. Clever and hilarious, I look forward to them every week. I linked to the latest one for Lady of the Lake but there's links to all the earlier ones there.

Also for Merlin fans, Merlin Friending Meme. Go, play and make new friends. And, welcome to all my new friends. *waves*

And for me,
love meme

It is the weekend, lovelies!! What do you have going on? Any fun and exciting things? Let me live vicariously! I have a pretty quiet weekend ahead which, given recent events, is probably a good thing. Really looking forward to Doctor Who, planning to devour some fic and possibly a beach trip tomorrow if the weather holds out. Also, I'm making this pomegranate chicken tonight. Yum! BTW, that link leads to greenlitebites, a great website for healthy, delicious meals; it's definitely worth looking over.

1. Am feeling better though not 100%. However, I have eaten today so I consider it a success! Plain rice around 10 am and dry toast around 4:30 pm and loads of ginger ale in between. Yum!  Of course I seem to be craving fondue. WTF, body?

2. I'm sorry I've been such rubbish at commenting lately. I am reading and I'm sharing in your joys and triumphs (one from yesterday might have made me dance in my chair) and sending tonnes of good thoughts to those struggling. *hugs*

3. Thanks to everyone who commented or PM-ed regarding my last post. I'm still horribly distressed over the entire thing but I spent a productive couple of hours this evening writing emails and making phone calls. I hope you all can do the same. Even just one email can make a difference.

4. "Just come out so we can talk...or sing about it." I think more fights and discussions should be resolved in this manner. Just saying.

5.  As some of you may know, I love US history (considered teaching it for a while even). So, imagine my delight when a Merlin AU took my love of Merlin and smushed it with my love of history. A Question of Liberty is a long and satisfying Merlin/Arthur read set during the Revolutionary War. Merlin is an indentured servant who arrives in America in 1774 and is quickly swept up in the coming Revolution. I really appreciated [livejournal.com profile] riventhorn 's attention to detail and historical accuracy. I loved her characterizations and how the whole story fell into place. If you have some time, check it out.
